History of LattA (29565)
In 1887 the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad had a great need for train depot as the closest available stop was in Wilmington, NC. ACLR planned to erect a station in Dillon, South Carolina and another 7 miles to the south in what would later be named Latta, South Carolina. In 1890 the Town of Latta received its charter status named after Robert Latta who orchestrated the engineering, surveyed the area, and also constructed the original plans for The Town of Latta on behalf of the railroad. There are roughly 55 historic properties all constructed between 1890 and 1930. These properties are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In addition, the Latta Library is one of original 14 Carnegie Libraries constructed in South Carolina., In present day the Latta Library is one of the five remaining libraries from the original fourteen.
